It's immediate sequel was The Light Fantastic which resolves the cliff hanger ending at the end of the previous book in a way that Douglas Adams would have approved of. Abandoning this in favour of an in-series set of jokes and references naturally gave the series an entirely different set of legs, but this book, in my fond and doubtless deficient memory at least, also worked really well.
